About the Journal
El-Qist: Journal of Islamic Economics and Business (JIEB) is an international, peer-reviewed scholarly journal published biannually by the Faculty of Islamic Economics and Business, UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya, Indonesia. The journal is dedicated to advancing rigorous research on the legal, ethical, and empirical dimensions of religious studies of economic practice within diverse socio-economic contexts.
El-Qist positions itself as a specialized academic forum at the intersection of fiqh al-muʿāmalah, Islamic ethical thought, and evidence-based economic inquiry. Rather than addressing Islamic economics in a broad or purely descriptive manner, the journal focuses on how Islamic legal norms, moral principles, and institutional frameworks are interpreted, implemented, and contested in contemporary economic systems.
Responding to the evolving landscape of Islamic finance, social finance, and Sharia-compliant business, El-Qist prioritizes research that integrates normative Islamic jurisprudence with empirical analysis and policy relevance. The journal publishes original studies that examine Islamic economic institutions, governance mechanisms, financial regulation, ethical business conduct, and economic behavior from clearly articulated legal and ethical perspectives.
El-Qist strongly encourages interdisciplinary and methodologically robust contributions, including qualitative, quantitative, doctrinal, and mixed-methods research. Empirical case studies are welcomed when they demonstrate analytical or theoretical relevance beyond their immediate local context. While maintaining a global scholarly orientation, the journal recognizes Indonesia and other Muslim-majority societies as important sites of Islamic economic and legal innovation, offering insights of broader international significance.
Through a double-blind peer-review process and a structured editorial system based on thematic expertise, El-Qist seeks to serve scholars, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners interested in the normative foundations and real-world dynamics of Islamic economic life. By fostering sustained dialogue between legal theory, ethical reasoning, and economic practice, the journal aims to contribute to internationally relevant and policy-informed scholarship in the field of Islamic economics.
Peer Review Process
El-Qist: Journal of Islamic Economics and Business (JIEB) implement a double-blind peer-review process, in which the identities of both authors and reviewers are kept anonymous. The journal assigns a minimum of two reviewers, with the option to assign more if necessary, to ensure thorough and unbiased evaluations of manuscripts.
Manuscripts submitted to El-Qist undergo an initial screening by the Board of Editors to assess their alignment with the journal’s writing guidelines, scope, and academic quality. Those that pass this desk review proceed to the double-blind peer review stage, during which neither authors nor reviewers are aware of each other’s identities.
Desk Review
At the desk review stage, manuscripts are examined for adherence to the journal’s guidelines, scope, and academic rigor. If they do not meet these standards, authors may be given the opportunity to revise their manuscripts accordingly. However, manuscripts may also be rejected at this stage without the opportunity for revision.
Peer Review
Once a manuscript has passed the desk review, it is forwarded to at least two expert reviewers. The review process typically takes three weeks. Manuscripts that do not pass the desk review will not proceed to this stage.
Reviewer’s Decision
Reviewers will make one of the following recommendations:
-
Accepted: The manuscript is suitable for publication.
-
Accepted with Minor Revisions: Minor improvements are required before publication.
-
Accepted with Major Revisions: Substantive changes (e.g., to data analysis, theoretical framework, or structure) are required.
-
Rejected: The manuscript is not suitable for publication, often due to fundamental flaws.
The editorial board will make the final decision based on reviewers’ recommendations.
Revision Stage
If revisions are requested, the manuscript will be returned to the author along with a review summary form. Authors are given three weeks to revise manuscripts requiring major revisions, and one week for minor revisions. The completed review summary form must accompany revised manuscripts.
Final Decision
After resubmission, the editorial board will evaluate whether the revisions adequately address the reviewers’ concerns. If the revisions are deemed insufficient, the manuscript may still be rejected.
Proofreading
Once accepted, the manuscript undergoes proofreading to ensure linguistic quality.
Publication Confirmation
The final layout of the manuscript is sent to the author for approval. At this stage, the author may correct typographical errors. Upon confirmation, the manuscript is prepared for online and print publication.
